Every time I hear this smart ass remark or see people sharing the memes I laugh. I laugh at the ignorance at those too childish to look for a deeper understanding. When I see the memes 2 threads of thought come to mind:
The obvious. Why isn’t a trainer in shape? What’s the hindrance? Do you need to be in shape to impart PROPER knowledge?
Do you know how many trainers I know that look the part but teach bad form, are impatient with clients and have terrible nutritional advice for others, particularly those of the opposite sex.
Why doesn’t the trainer have a trainer? What are you doing to continually better yourself? No one knows everything, so how do you continue to be better, not just for yourself, but for your clients?
Now there are many ways you can better yourself, other than having a trainer i.e. continual readings, workshop attendance etc. Personally, I like having people around that speak the same jargon and we can debate about new techniques, share ideas on what has worked for different clients etc and there’s nothing like a good gym buddy that you know will show up on time and as motivated as you.
There’s the saying that if you want to be successful at something, you need to look at the 5 closest people to you. Look at your 5 right now. Are any of those people capable of helping you achieve your fullest potential, in a particular goal?
I’ve found that when it comes to training, staying motivated and pushing yourself toward excellence, your environment is a key factor.
