Learning correct techniques and form, in any industry can mean the difference between accomplishing a goal, and frankly, just wasting time and resources.

I won’t bore you with any examples, i’m sure you can think of a few instances that you could have saved valuable time by simply following a guide book or seeking professional help.

Anywhoo… lets get straight to it!

Even if you’re someone that hasn’t run in years, an occasional after work runner, or an absolute beginner, these five tips will give you the advantage you need to feel awesome during and after your run and actually see real results!

1. Wear the right sneakers

Obviously.

But what makes a good pair of running sneakers?

The most important elements to consider when looking for a running shoe is

FIT, FEEL, & FUNCTION.

This over whatever brand logo is stitched on the side.

If you can get your feet measured, please do (share some locations in the comment section if you know any)

Other generic tips:

  1. Don’t use shoes the old sneakers you play jouvert with 2 years ago! It’s not going to give your feet the support it needs, and will most definitely lead to injury.

  2. You’re probably gonna want to go a 1/2 size bigger than your regular shoe size

  3. Do some research before you buy. Go online, Ask around, Ask me!

2. Have a Banana

#ProTip

Bananas are awesome for many reasons, but before a run (or any workout) it can be especially advantageous.

Other than a big energy boost, the potassium works as a natural pain-killer, so no achy calves, ankles and knees!

Hungry? Have a Peanut butter and banana sandwich on whole-grain bread (360 calories)- Eat this 60 to 90 minutes before your workout. All the ingredients provide carbs for energy; the peanut butter offers extra protein to fend off hunger; and, the banana provides potassium to help stave off muscles cramps.

3. Breathe

4. Keep your knee in line.

This is one even regular runners may not know.

Correct running form can prevent injury, increase speed, distance and overall performance.

It doesn’t matter if you land on the front of your feet or heel first, the most important part of your stride is your knees.

“Make sure your foot strikes under your knee, not in front of it, which can lead to injury. It doesn’t matter whether the heel or forefoot hits the ground first, as long as your foot is not in front of your knee. This is especially important when running downhill.” - source

5. ReFuel & Recover!

Instinctively after a run the first thing you feel like doing is kicking your shoes off.. do it!

Change into dry comfortable footwear, let your feet breathe.

Regardless of whether you can shower right away or not, change your clothes, socks, and shoes immediately to keep your muscles warm and loose. This promotes good circulation, which aids the recovery process after a run.

What to eat after a run?

The worse thing you can do is think “well I exercised today, I earned this beef pie, and apple J…”

No,

You’re gonna eat back all the calories you’ve just burned!

Pointless.

Instead, Try to get in some Protein, a little fat & some complex carbs

Think.. whole wheat chicken/ tuna sandwich. Yoghurt with fruit… or, a Protein Shake!
